La Asociación de Gente Unida por el Agua

Formed in 2006, the AGUA Coalition (la Asociación de Gente Unida por el Agua, or the Association of People United for Water) is a regional, grassroots coalition of impacted community residents and allied non-profit organizations dedicated to securing safe, clean, and affordable drinking water for San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast communities.

“My mother was one of those affected [by contaminants]. She got sick. The water well that we had was very contaminated with nitrates. We’re fighting for water quality, starting in my town, but it’s not just my town that has problems with nitrates.”

— Sandra Garcia, Poplar, CA, member of the AGUA Coalition and Poplar Community Services District.

At AGUA we drive change by:

MOBILIZING impacted residents to push for sustainable solutions that address the root causes of drinking water contamination.

AGUA Member Bartolo Chavez is joined by other impacted residents and Dolores Huerta to urge his local California Assemblywoman to prioritize a safe drinking water solution for their community of Arvin, CA.

ELEVATING our stories of living with unsafe water with the media, decision-makers, and the public to gain momentum towards lasting change.

Our members, like Simona Magana from Seville, CA (right), travel to the State Capital throughout the year to share our realities of living with contaminated water to humanize the fight for the Human Right to Water.

PROTECTING our environment and groundwater from further contamination through education, advocacy, and watchdog monitoring; holding polluters accountable; and creating systemic change.

Our Coalition hosts monthly meetings where we share crucial information on drinking water contaminants and strategize on movement-building campaigns to achieve long-term solutions for our communities.
